The longtime and legendary football coach of the “Fighting Irish” at Notre Dame, Lou Holtz, when asked one off-season where he thought his team was in its preparation for the next year’s season, answered, “Well, at this moment we’re getting in position to get in position to win”.
We want all of our friends and colleagues around the world to know that right now, we too are similarly disposed: We’re working on getting in position to get in position to write what we’re calling, “a collective memoir” and the story of the US Army’s Organizational Effectiveness School.
Our plan is to write the book through the eyes and experiences of the School’s staff & faculty and its some 1,800+ graduates during their deployments into the Army during the decade spanning the mid-1970s and early 1980s as they served as principals in what would become the largest group of practicing internal leadership and management development consultants ever assembled.
The thesis of the book is that far from ending upon its closure the OE School has lived on, and in fact, is still expanding its reach. The book will illustrate that the OE School survived its demise, and lives on in the post-military, commercial careers and lives of many of the people it touched, and may even play a significant part in the new worldwide ‘Awakening’ that we believe is currently underway.
The book will follow many of the graduates into their post-military careers during which their OE skilled knowledge matured, translated itself into unexpected places, and touched literally hundreds, if not thousands of people around the world.
The working title of the book is, Teaching Toward Peace: A Collective Memoir of the Men and Women on the Front Lines of the US Army’s Decade-Long Experiment in Raising Consciousness and Reclaiming Its Culture
We are currently engaged in the long and arduous process of trying to locate and find contact information for as many former OEC&S staff and faculty members and graduates of the School as possible in order to invite them to join us in this project by being interviewed.
We have also established the website oe-institute.com to serve as a platform for the book and for us to more easily stay in touch now and into the future. We envision that as things progress, the website will become a focal point for yet undetermined OE-related activities and opportunities as well as being a vehicle that can be used to engage and develop a new generation of OE practitioners.
We ask for your patience and understanding during our “getting into position to get into position…” phase. There has already been a gap in our communications with you for which we apologize. Although it is frustrating for you and us, we know realistically that there will likely be other semi-long periods during which we go silent. We will do our best to minimize those and we will provide in-progress updates on the work we’re doing via this website. We also invite you to reach out to us when the spirit so moves you. You can get in touch with us by clicking here, we’d love to hear from you.
We wish you a terrific summer!
More to follow…
